WHAT IS A CONTACT LENS EXAM?

A contact lens exam is a specialized assessment that goes beyond a standard comprehensive eye examination. This evaluation includes additional measurements and clinical assessments required to determine the safest and most effective contact lens option for each patient.

During the contact lens examination, the doctor may evaluate:
  • Corneal curvature and shape
  • Tear film quality and ocular surface health
  • Refractive prescription and visual acuity
  • Lens fit and movement on the eye
  • Overall ocular health and suitability for contact lens wear

These assessments allow the doctor to ensure that the selected contact lenses provide clear vision, proper fit, and safe long-term wear.

IMPORTANCE OF PROPER CONTACT LENS FITTING

Proper contact lens fitting is essential for maintaining ocular comfort, visual performance, and eye health.

Ill-fitting contact lenses may lead to symptoms such as dryness, irritation, blurred vision, or reduced oxygen transmission to the cornea. A professional fitting ensures that the selected lenses align appropriately with the corneal surface and allow adequate oxygen flow to maintain corneal health.

At C-Luminous Eyecare, patients also receive detailed guidance on:
  • Proper contact lens hygiene and care
  • Safe wearing schedules
  • Lens insertion and removal techniques
  • Preventative measures to support long-term eye health

MAINTAINING EYE HEALTH WHILE WEARING CONTACT LENSES

Patients who wear contact lenses should undergo regular eye examinations to ensure that the lenses remain appropriate and that the eyes remain healthy.

Routine evaluations allow the doctor to monitor the cornea, tear film, and ocular surface, helping detect potential complications early and ensuring continued safe lens wear.

Advances in contact lens materials and design allow increased oxygen permeability and improved comfort, making modern lenses safer and more comfortable than ever before when prescribed and monitored appropriately.

CONTACT LENS DISCLAIMER

Contact lenses will only be prescribed and dispensed following a comprehensive contact lens evaluation and fitting, as required by the applicable standards set forth by the State Board of Optometry and federal law.  A comprehensive eye exam alone does not guarantee eligibility for contact lenses. A separate contact lens evaluationis required to assess ocular health, corneal measurements, lens compatibility, and visual acuity with contact lenses.  According to the FTC’s Contact Lens Rule and Board of Optometry guidelines, patients are entitled to a copy of their contact lens prescription only after the contact lens fitting process is complete. This may require one or more follow-up visits to ensure that the lenses are safe, appropriate, and provide clear, comfortable vision.  Patients must return for follow-up visits as directed in order to finalize the prescription. A finalized prescription will not be released until the prescribing doctor determines that a proper fit has been achieved and no ocular health risks are present.
